Where do Baldwins come from?
The Baldwin was a spontaneous mutation from White Crested Guinea pigs to a Californian cavy Fancier, Carol Miller, who was breeding Golden Agouti white crested for show. One of her pairing resulted in a litter that had a few pigs that ended up loosing their hair. Once the breeder saw those bald guinea pigs growing & thriving, the decision was made to repeat the breeding. Sure enough more bald Pigs!! Baldwins are born with a full coat which falls out until they're bald.
Characteristics of a Baldwin:
Numerous skin wrinkles and a very small amount of hair on their feet only.
Don't confuse them with skinnys. They are two separate breeds with two very different genes that causes the loss of hair and are NOT compatible.
Baldwins require special accommodation , as they need to be kept warm & are not suitable to living outdoors. They also require extra food as they have a high metabolism to produce extra body heat to stay warm.
